The Role

As an Expert Process Safety Engineer, you will serve as a subject matter expert within DNV, leading complex process safety assignments and supporting clients in managing major hazard risks across energy segments, including Oil & Gas, hydrogen/Power-to-X, CCUS and Refineries.

You will provide expert guidance, lead multidisciplinary studies, mentor colleagues, and contribute to the continued development of DNV's process safety services and methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Act as a subject matter expert in Process Safety and Major Accident Risk Management.
• Lead complex and high-profile process safety projects across industries such as Power-to-X, Oil & Gas and CC(U)S
• Provide technical assurance and quality review of project deliverables.
• Develop innovative approaches to safety challenges across traditional and emerging industries.
• Support development and improvement of DNV methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  
  

Project Delivery

• Independently review key design documents (e.g., P&IDs, Cause and Effect Chart, PSV, Blowdown & Flare system design, Hazardous area classification reports etc.) for compliance with EU Directives, legislation, recognized codes and standards.
• Support customers and other DNV units process in process safety studies, including HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie Analysis, SIL Determination, Functional Safety Assessments, Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), Safety Case Development, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
• Lead and SIL Determination, Functional Safety Assessments in accordance with IEC 61511.
• Manage technical scope, project quality, and client expectations.
• Lead DNV technical assurance and assess complex technical plant developments in terms of process and technical safety.
• Deliver projects on time and to the highest professional standards.
  
  

Client Engagement

• Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and stakeholders.
• Present technical findings to project teams, senior management, and regulatory authorities.
• Build and maintain long-term client relationships.
• Support proposal preparation and business development activities.
• Identify opportunities to expand DNV service offerings.
  
  

Knowledge Sharing

• Mentor junior engineers and developing specialists.
• Contribute to training initiatives and capability development.
• Publish technical papers, participate in industry forums, and represent DNV at conferences.
• Share lessons learned and promote technical excellence throughout the organization.

About You

Education

• MSc degree in Process Engineering or related engineering discipline
• PM certification (e.g. PMP or Prince2) will be considered a plus, but not a requirement.
  
  

Experience

• Minimum 10-15 years of experience in Process Safety.
• Significant experience in one or more of the following sectors: Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals/Chemicals, Hydrogen, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and/or Renewable Energy
• Proven experience leading complex process safety projects.
• Demonstrated capability as a technical authority and trusted advisor familiar with applicable legislation and international standards in the subject matter domain.
  
  

Technical Expertise

The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge and practical experience in several of the following areas:

• Proven expertise in process safety studies (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, SIL, FSA, QRA)
• Strong understanding of EU onshore and offshore legislation and relevant standards (PED 2024/68/EU, IEC 61511 / 61508, EN / ISO 10418, ISO 22734, EN 764-7, ISO 13702, API standards, etc.)
• Independently review and validate design documents against international codes and standards

Desirable Qualifications

The following would be considered an advantage:

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional registration.
• TÜV Functional Safety Engineer Certification.
• IChemE Professional Membership.
• Recognized HAZOP Leader qualification.
• Experience with emerging energy technologies such as Hydrogen, Ammonia, CCS, or Power-to-X.
• Experience working with international regulations and standards.
